The Service Register of Johann(es) Poy, Sexton of the Hofburg Chapel:
A Source on the Liturgy at Court in the Mid-18 th Century
I he Service register of Johann(es) Poy is a rare document on the liturgy
used at court. It comes from the library of the Hofburg priest Alois Langenau,
who held that position from 19 June 1784 to 3 August 1809. The
register probably came to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in 1921 along
with the inventories of the various court chapels. In contrast to ceremonial
regulations, which focused on the rank of individuals and the observance
of court hierarchy at various official, secular and religious events,
the records of the sexton of the Hofburg Chapel provide a look behind
the scenes. As the administrator of the chapel’s sacristy, Johann Poy was
responsible for providing seating in keeping with the occasion and the
rank of the participants, adequate lighting for the church interior and for
preparing the necessary liturgical implements and suitable paraments. On
various occasions the sexton was also responsible for fetching precious
relics from the Ecclesiastical Treasury of the Hofburg. Johann Poy’s Service
register evokes living images of spiritual life at the imperial court
around the mid-18 lh Century.
The transcription was made letter for letter. Only the use of i-j and u-v
was adapted to fit the sound of the word. In general everything was written
in small letters with the exception of names of persons, places and
months as well as headings and the first word of a sentence. Punctuation
was added only to improve comprehension of the text. All remarks and
additions are written in italics and enclosed in brackets.
