A  Rediscovered  Portrait  by  Gonzales  Coques  (1614/18-1684)
from  the  Collection  of  Archduke  Leopold  Wilhelm
The  author  attributes  a  portrait  of  Archduke  Leopold  Wilhelm  in  the
Gemäldegalerie,  which  was  previously  considered  anonymous,  to  Gonzales ­
  Coques  (Fig.  1).  She  assigns  the  work  chronologically  to  1650  and  compares
  it  stylistically  with  Coques’  signed  portrait  of  Lukas  Fayd’herbes
(Brussels,  Musees  Royaux  des  Beaux-Arts).  In  addition,  she  identifies  it
with  an  entry  in  the  1659  inventory  of  Leopold  Wilhelms  collection  -
No.  715.  This  painting  was  considered  lost  until  now.
The  diminutive  copper  panel  has  long  been  incorporated  into  the  portrait
collection  of  Archduke  Ferdinand  II  and  displayed  in  a  seperate  area  of
the  museum.  The  old  inventory  numbers  on  the  front  and  back  of  the
copper  panel  allow  the  various  stations  in  the  painting’s  history  to  be
reconstructed.  After  Archduke  Leopold  Wilhelm  transferred  his  collection ­
  to  Vienna  in  1657,  it  was  displayed  in  the  Stallburg.  In  the  gallery
