Sammlung von George Villiers, 1st duke of Buckingham.

Abstract

With his Head of Medusa, Rubens created a painting which likely competes with
the work by Leonardo, only documented in Vasari’s descriptions, and Caravaggio’s
Medusa shield.

He executed this inventive composition once on oak panel and once on
canvas: During Rubens’ lifetime, one Head of Medusa was documented in the
collection of the wealthy, originally Flemish merchant Nicolaes Sohier in
Amsterdam and another one in London, in the collection of George Villiers, 1st
Duke of Buckingham.

While the whereabouts of the Viennese painting can be traced back via
Amsterdam, Antwerp and Prague all the way to London, the trail of Nicolaes
Sohier’s version is lost 1719 in The Hague. However, it’s likely the same painting
that was documented almost 100 years later in Prague and is now located in the
Moravian Gallery in Brno. In this Point of View, both versions can be seen in the
same room for the first time since their creation in Rubens’ workshop. 33
